SANTA BARBARA -- Objects large and small that have taken up
residence at the bottom of Santa Barbara Harbor will be removed by
divers during Operation Clean Sweep, May 9.

The harbor will receive a spring cleaning, of sorts, when a team
of divers will plunge into the waters off the commercial fishing docks
and remove underwater refuse. Twenty-five dock workers will catalog and
cart off the items retrieved. Larger objects will be carried by safety
boats.

The event is supported by the city of Santa Barbara’s Waterfront
Department, Santa Barbara ChannelKeeper and Surfrider Foundation. Local
dive businesses and urchin fisherman also join in the effort.

In the past three years that the cleanup has been held, divers
have removed many unusual objects -- including steering wheels,
barbecues and bikes.

The public is invited to head down to the harbor and observe the dive starting at 8 a.m.

For more information, contact the harbormaster’s office at (805) 564-5531.
